| | | The Soap Box Derby is a youth racing program which has run nationally since 1934. World Championship finals are held each July at Derby Downs in Akron, Ohio.
Each year since, with the exception of during World War II, youngsters throughout the United States and several foreign countries have come to Akron with the racers thaty have build and driven to victory in their home communities.
The goals of the Soap Box Derby program have not changed since it began in 1934. They are to teach youngsters some of the basic skills of workmanship, the spirit of competition, sportsmanship and the perseverance to continue a project once it has begun.

The local race, Capital District Soap Box Derby, has had many participants over the years. The event was strong in the 70's, but stopped sometime later. Ginger Miller, the mother of a boy who participated in the 70's decided that she wanted other kids to have the same experience as her son did. So she started the race again in the Capital District in 2005. With the help of many volunteers, Ginger has led the Capital District Soap Box Derby to prominence once again.
