SOAP BOX DERBY BOARD APPROVES CHANGES TO FOUR RULES At its meeting on Thursday, Jan, 12, 2012, the All-American Soap Box Derby’s Board of Directors approved changes to four rules, as our participating race families throughout the world have been requesting.
These changes, which are all effective immediately, are intended to reduce the expense of purchasing new racer components, to encourage participation and to promote fair competition.
The changes are:
Floorboards: The All-American organization is rescinding a change that was to take effect on Aug. 1, 2012, requiring racers to buy new floorboards. Any floorboard will be permitted as long as it has been engraved with the Soap Box Derby logo (a process that began in 1999).
Axles: Also rescinded is a rule change requiring new axles. In the Stock and Super Stock divisions, axles made in 2000 and newer years are permitted; Masters’ car axles must be from 2004 or newer. Year of manufacture is stamped on the axles.
Floorboard coatings: Racers now can coat their floorboards with tung oil in addition to wax. The current rule limits any coating to wax.
Epoxy: Epoxy will now be permitted when installing the kingpin to hold the kingpin in place tightly.
2012 Capital District Race Rules 1. All wheels should have been cleaned out with break cleaner and lubricated before the race. Nothing should be done the day of the race. All wheels have to be marked with magic marker LR,RR,LF,RF and your last name. Also last name on your helmet. 2. Any break pads or emergency repair during a race has to be oked by one of the inspectors or myself. You will be given a little flag to put up on your car so we will know it was oked. Otherwise noone should be working on the car at any time during a race. 3. Immediate elimanation of that heat if anyone lunging forward or puts any extra clothing or shoes in back or in front of their car at starting gate. 4. If for any reason a driver stops before the end of the race he or she will be elimanated from that heat. 5. Every driver should be ready to race when it is time or they will be elimated from that heat. 6. Final weigh in a dot will be on your helmet and on each side of the car. This is where you will sit at the starting gate. If for any reason you want to change your sitting position, you will have to be re weighed and dots adjusted. 7. If anyone has any suggestions on how to make our race better for next year; Please take note and let me know at the meetings, NOT ON RACE DAY. 8. Trophy awards immediately after the Sunday race inside the museum after all props are cleaned up.
- No axels, or floor boards before 2002
- No floor boards made of particle board
- No turn-buckels for Stock and Super Stock
- Must have plastic air foils instead of wood
- We will have at least 4 inspectors nest year and the cars will be impounded two weeks before the race rather then one day (it is impossible to inspect all the cars properly in 24 hours). This will also give everyone one week to change or fix their cars. Cars will be weighed at random after each heat.
- If you have cars to sell or want one to buy please contact the Race Director: Ginger Miller
All participants must attend at least one meeting, from now till the next race.
NATIONAL RULE CHANGE FOR FLOORBOARDS
As of October 1, 2009,
The following stock and super stock laminated floorboards manufactured during the period of 1998 through 2005 will be phased out as follows with a final phase out date of August 1, 2012 (Revised to August 1 2013)
A description of the floorboards and their markings are as follows:
1998: The floorboards that do not have a burn stamp on them.
Phased out: Immediately
1999-2001: The floorboards that have a “SBD” burn stamp on them.
Phased out: No later than August 1, 2011 (Revised to August 1 2012)
2002-2005: The floorboards that have a “SBD/Shield” burn stamp on them.
Phased out: No later than August 1, 2012 (Revised to August 1 2013)
Additionally, the following shall apply:
Stock division: If upon measuring, any stock car that is found to have the front king pin greater than 7-15/16” from the front center of the floorboard to the center of the king pin, the floorboard is now considered illegal and can no longer be used.
Stock division: The center of the front king pin to the center of the rear king pin is 61-1/8” with a tolerance of +/- 1/16”. If upon measuring, these conditions are not met, the floorboard is now considered illegal and can no longer be used.
Super Stock division: If upon measuring, the front king pin is found to be greater than 5-13/16” from the front center of the floorboard to the center of the king pin, the floorboard is now considered illegal and can no longer be used.
Super Stock division: The center of the front king to the center of the rear king pin is 63-3/8” with a tolerance of +/- 1/16”. If upon measuring, these conditions are not met, the floorboard is now considered illegal and can no longer be used.
The rational behind this phase out period is listed below:
1. Racers were permitted to re-drill their king pin hole in order to install the bushing.
2. Some racers have taken advantage of the opportunity to re-drill the king pin hole and as a result have moved the hole closer to the rear of the car.
3. With the above occurring, this has created an unfair advantage to the racers that installed their bushings properly and are racing with floorboards manufactured after 2005.
